Soft Filipino Pandesal Bread Rolls Recipe

Pandesal is a classic Filipino bread roll that is typically paired with a cup of coffee for breakfast. These rolls are airy, slightly sweet and salted, hence their name in Spanish-- 'pan' (bread) and 'de sal' (of salt). This deliciously easy recipe allows you to bring a taste of the Philippines to your kitchen.

1. Step

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir to dissolve and let it stand for about 10 minutes or until frothy.

2. Step

Add the beaten egg, melted butter, and salt into the yeast mixture. Stir well to incorporate.

Gradually add the flour to the mixture, stirring well after each addition, until a dough is formed.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes or until it is smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.

5. Step

Once the dough has doubled, punch it down and divide it into about 20-25 pieces. Roll each piece into a log shape, and then roll these into breadcrumbs.

6. Step

Place the bread roll pieces on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space for them to expand.

7. Step

Let the bread rolls rest for another 20 minutes while you preheat your oven to 375 F.

8. Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

9. Step

Serve warm and enjoy with your favorite coffee or tea.
