VIDEORECIPE The easiest homemade bao buns
This is an Asian steamed bun, with a characteristic pocket shape, which once cooked can be opened and filled with an infinite number of delicious fillings, such as the now fashionable snack "Gua Bao" (Taiwanese sandwich or hamburger).
- 500 g fine flour
- 51⁄2 g Instant Yeast
- 40 g white sugar
- 240 ml water
- 30 ml vegetable oil
Put the flour in a bowl.
In a bowl, mix the yeast with warm water.
Add sugar, vegetable oil and mix well.
Gradually add the yeast mixture to the flour. When it has absorbed all the liquid, start kneading.
Transfer the dough to a surface and knead for about 10 minutes.
Cover with plastic wrap and let the dough rest for 45 minutes until it has almost doubled in size.
Remove and knead again for another 10 minutes.
Divide the dough into two equal parts and roll it into a pair of cylinders. Cut each cylinder into 8 equal parts to make 16 pieces in total. Take one piece and cover the rest with a damp cloth.
Form a ball and with the help of a rolling pin roll it into an oval shape.
Put a little oil on the middle of the piece, so that it does not stick together during cooking and can be opened easily.
Fold in half and place on the baking paper. Repeat with the remaining pieces. Leave to rest for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Place in a steamer and steam over boiling water for 10 minutes.
Turn off the heat, uncover the lid a little and leave to stand for 5 more minutes, so that our Bao bun does not deflate.
Now it's ready to serve and enjoy.
